Where the ferry berths
The ferry from IJmuiden does not berth in central Newcastle but in North Shields at the mouth of the Tyne. The terminal is called the DFDS International Passenger Terminal and is at Albert Edward Dock, Royal Quays, North Shields NE29 6EE. It is open from 09:00 to 16:30. The ferry arrives here at 09:15 local time in the morning and leaves for IJmuiden at 17:00.
Arriving in the morning
After docking, all passengers leave the ship. By car you drive off down the ramp; on foot you walk across the gangway into the terminal. Then comes UK border control; keep your passport ready, as the ETA is linked to it digitally. What you need to enter the UK is on the Check-in page.
By car
By car you drive from the terminal straight onto the road network of north-east England. In the UK you drive on the left. For the return journey, be in the check-in lanes by 16:15; vehicles with low ground clearance need to arrive earlier.
The transfer bus to the centre
DFDS offers a transfer bus between the terminal and the city centre, operated by Go North East. In the centre it stops on Bewick Street opposite Newcastle Central station. It leaves there for the terminal at 14:30 and 15:30, in good time before check-in closes. Your booking confirmation is your ticket, the bus should be booked in advance, and you can only take luggage you can carry yourself. Prices are on the Prices & fares page.
Metro, bus and taxi
The terminal can also be reached by Metro, local bus and taxi. From Newcastle Central station, trains run to the rest of Great Britain, north towards Scotland as well as south. The Getting there & onward travel page explains how to continue your journey from here.
