Motorhomes, caravans and trailers
Motorhomes, cars towing a caravan and trailers travel on the vehicle decks of the King Seaways and the Princess Seaways. DFDS sails the route overnight every day in both directions: from IJmuiden at 17:30 and from North Shields at 17:00. The Princess Seaways has more space on the vehicle decks; the timetable shows which ship sails on your date.
When you book
When you book, give the full vehicle type and dimensions of your motorhome or car and caravan, including trailer and add-ons such as bike racks. The Prices & fares page gives the starting price for motorhomes.
The night on board
The vehicle deck is closed during the crossing, so you cannot sleep in your motorhome. You book a cabin as well, and every cabin has its own bathroom. The categories are described on the Cabins page. Take everything you need for the night with you before you leave the vehicle deck.
Dogs and motorhomes
On this route DFDS does not let dogs stay in the vehicle, not even in a motorhome. They travel in a pet cabin or a kennel on board. If you are travelling with a dog, book a pet cabin early, as there are only a few. The rules and the UK entry documents are on the Dogs & pets page.
Check-in and arrival
Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. Vehicles with low ground clearance check in earlier; the times are on the Check-in page. In the morning the vehicle deck opens about 15 minutes before docking. In the UK you drive on the left, and the Scottish border is around 90 km from Newcastle.
