Why the cabin is part of the trip
The Amsterdam - Newcastle ferry sails overnight: departure in the late afternoon, arrival the next morning. So the cabin is not an extra but the place where you spend the crossing, and it makes up a large part of the price. On both ships, the King Seaways and the Princess Seaways, every cabin has its own bathroom. The choice is really about beds, location and comfort.
The categories
Economy cabin. Inside or outside, with one to four beds and a private bathroom. The usual choice for families with children and for groups sharing a cabin.
Double-bed cabin. For couples, with a double bed instead of bunks, inside or with a sea view.
Sea-view cabin. With a window onto the sea, for up to five people depending on the cabin. Book this category if you want to watch the ship leave port in the evening or sail into the Tyne in the morning.
Commodore and Commodore de Luxe. The top categories, with more space and lounge access. The Commodore de Luxe is only available on the King Seaways; the timetable shows which ship sails on your date.
With a dog: the pet cabin
If you are travelling with a dog and want to keep it with you, you need a pet cabin. It has four beds and a sea view, sleeps up to four people and a maximum of two medium-sized dogs, and has access to the dog deck. On the Princess Seaways the pet cabins are on deck 4, on the King Seaways on deck 5, reachable by stairs only. There are only a few of them; the alternative is a kennel on board. Accessible cabins
For wheelchair users DFDS has accessible cabins for two people. They are larger than the standard cabins and have tiled floors, single beds and a shower with a seat and grab rails; some of them have a sea view. Select this category when you book.
Which cabin for whom
A family of four with children usually manages with an Economy cabin; if there are five of you, look for a sea-view cabin with five beds. Couples who see the night as part of the holiday go for the double-bed cabin with a sea view or a Commodore category. With a dog the choice is between a pet cabin and a kennel.
