Getting to IJmuiden

The ferry leaves from IJmuiden on the North Sea coast west of Amsterdam, not from the city centre. By car you drive straight to the terminal on the Sluisplein. If you leave your car there and continue on foot, you park in the car park at the terminal; spaces are reserved by phone.

Without a car there are two options: the DFDS transfer bus from De Ruijterkade 153 behind Amsterdam Centraal at 15:30 and 16:00, or the train to Beverwijk and the local bus from there to IJmuiden. Check-in closes at 16:45. Address, parking and opening hours are on the IJmuiden ferry terminal page.

Arriving in North Shields

The ferry arrives at 09:15 local time in the morning in North Shields at the mouth of the Tyne. After UK border control you are on your way: by car straight onto the road network, without a car on the transfer bus to Newcastle city centre, which stops on Bewick Street opposite Newcastle Central station, or by Metro, local bus and taxi. Onward by car

In the UK you drive on the left. From Newcastle you can reach the rest of north-east England directly, and the Scottish border is only around 90 km away. Onward by train

From Newcastle Central station, trains run to the rest of Great Britain. The transfer bus takes you there directly from the terminal. If you are travelling on foot or by bike, you will find the details on the On foot & by bike page.

The return journey

For the return to IJmuiden, the ferry leaves North Shields at 17:00, and check-in closes at 16:15. The transfer bus leaves Bewick Street for the terminal at 14:30 and 15:30. You are in IJmuiden at 09:45 the next morning, and in central Amsterdam around 30 to 40 minutes later on the transfer bus.
